Why the @Google G is not a circle: Sometimes things don’t need tweaking or redoing! They just need to be understood. At face value, there are so many ways the Google G could be refined to be more symmetrical... you could align the angles and keep all the weights consistent. But Google is very intentional behind the design decisions. Almost crazy amounts of detail have gone in to the use of optimal balance. It’s the fact that it’s imperfectly perfect that makes it so genius. The human brain and eyes often get confused. Perfect shapes can look wrong. And wrong shapes can look perfect. This is why this Google G is so clever. The G is also taken from the logotype and bulked up in weight to work at small sizes. The team at Google say: “Designed on the same grid as our product iconography, the circular shape was optically refined to prevent a visual “overbite” at the point where the circular form meets the crossbar.” Also: “The color proportions convey the full spectrum of the logotype and are sequenced to aid eye movement around the letterform.” There you go team… I hope this knowledge helps your creative brain look at logos with a kinder eye. Have the best day.
