The Purpose and Meaning of the Rituaล๐ฌ๐ท โBanishing Evil: People believe that by throwing pots out of their windows or from their balconies, they drive away evil spirits and leave the past behind. โRenewal: The loud sound made by the shattering pots symbolises the awakening of nature and a โNew Beginningโ. โAbundance and Prosperity: According to some local beliefs, taking a piece of the broken pottery home brings luck and prosperity for the year. โWhen Does It Take Place? โThis event takes place at exactly 11:00 am on Holy Saturday in the โSpianadaโ square in the centre of Corfu and the surrounding streets. As the church bells ring, hundreds of red, water-filled earthenware pots (botides) are dropped from above. Origins The origins of this tradition date back to the Venetian period. The Venetians would throw their old belongings out of their windows at the start of the new year to make room for the new. The people of Corfu adapted this tradition to Easter and, over time, transformed it into the spectacular visual spectacle we see today, featuring the throwing of these enormous red pots. ------------------- ูู ุฃุนุฌุจู ููุฏูู (Greeceโs Most Interesting Orthodox Easter Ritual: Botides!
