Coronavirus outbreak: Easter celebrations around the world amid social distancing
In Hungary’s Budapest, Hungarian World Cup 2014 triathlon race winner Akos Vanek, now a paramedic helping to fight the coronavirus, received a special baptism on Easter. As coronavirus restrictions prevented churches around the world from holding regular Easter celebrations, Belgian priest Tommy Scholtes turned to live streaming to keep a link with his community of churchgoers. He says "It's very touching to see that we are holding on together, even with such a separation.” Churches remained open in Belarus with people attending services in several villages in the Hrodno region, despite the global coronavirus pandemic. Belarus has recorded 2,578 cases and 26 coronavirus-related deaths, so far. A Sydney church in Australia offered their services online on Sunday to its parishioners as the coronavirus restrictions closed places of worship in the country. The One1Seven Evangelical Anglican Church in inner Sydney produced its own Easter service from an empty church hall, with Pastor Matt Johnson delivering his sermon via Facebook and YouTube. In Germany, Dusseldorf's drive-in cinema opened its doors on Easter Sunday to allow hundreds of Catholic worshippers to pray together while keeping their distance from each other to curb the spread of coronavirus. Strict social distancing measures have helped Germany to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. A total of 500 cars attended the church service while priests stood on a small stage and conducted mass. In the United Kingdom, one of the hardest-hit countries in Europe, the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby delivered a virtual sermon from the kitchen of his London flat for Easter Sunday. The senior bishop and principal leader of the church in England praised the "heroism" of the National Health Service and key workers in his speech. Many churches in Manila, Philippines’ capital, celebrated mass on Easter Sunday through livestreams amid the spread of the virus. Mass and other religious gatherings have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown as a precaution to help stop the spread of the virus in the country. The Philippines' health department confirmed a total of 4,428 total cases and 247 deaths in the country as of Sunday morning.
